You asked us a Question

How can I help you? Call 603-291-0396.

You asked us….Why Consign?

Consignment stores sell your quality treasures while you live your life.  Yard sales are great, unless it rains, unless it is too hot, unless your neighborhood says you can’t, or unless your son / daughter is the star player of the weekend’s game.  Consignment stores relieve the stress of having people coming to your home – as in Craigslist.  Consignment store personnel help you set the selling price, they will group your treasures with other treasures to help sell, they will advertise your treasure and they will treat you with respect.  Consigning earns extra income, cleans your home / attic / basement / spare bedroom and frees your time for the activities that you enjoy.

You asked us ...... Why did my item sell for that amount of money?
My grandmother used to say, "There are two sides of every quarter - heads and tails, sometimes you are on the side of heads and sometimes you are on the side of tails, but either way; you are on one side of the quarter." The quarter in this instance is the sale. Many people purchase from eBay and Consignment Shops because they a...re a great place to get a great deal. This is good for the buyer - good treasures at a low price. Many people sell on eBay and in Consignment Shops because they offer the convenience of selling without the need to hold set hours (such as a flea market or yard sale). This is good for the seller as your item sells at any time day or night and seven days a week.
Now comes the "which side of the quarter are you". Buyers don't want to pay a lot for items that are used. Sellers don't want their treasures, especially those with sentimental value, to sell inexpensively.
The treasure is the same, but your perspective is different. If you have purchased from eBay or a Consignment Shop and received a great deal, maybe even a "steal", then you were on one side of the quarter and the seller was on the other.
Our consignors are asked to make an appointment so we can sit with you and explain what the market is bearing at this time. The economy is not great, collectibles are selling at low prices, BUT you can sell your treasures. A Lot of This & A Lot of That can help you clean out our attic, basement and storage units and assist you in receiving money for treasures that are collecting dust. You can always say that you want to wait until the market is bearing a higher price.
You and your treasure are important to us and as long as we understand the "quarter"; you will be surprised at how much money is sitting in your attic.

You asked us ..... Parcel Post / First Class is so much less expensive, why should I use Priority?
Many of our buyers want to save money.  One of the biggest reasons that they / we purchase items on eBay or other internet sites (Amazon.com and Half.com) is to save money.  Skimping on shipping expense is not a wise choice.  The item may arrive damaged.  The item may arrive two to three weeks from the shipping date.  The item may not arrive at all.  Parcel Post and First Class do no allow tracking capabilities and they do not allow for insurance.  Your treasure that you purchased from an internet site and paid Parcel Post or First Class for shipping will not be treated nicely by the Post Office.  Priority Shipping allows for tracking capabilities, insurance, traditionally 2-3 day delivery (next day if you are in the same region).  Priority Shipping is handled by specialty trained postal workers and sent on specially assigned conveyors.  One example that we can share.  We sent two packages to the same person in the southern part of the USA.  One package weighed 5 pounds and one package weighed 40 pounds.  The buyer paid for Parcel Post.  We attempted to encourage Priority, but to no avail.  The 5 pound package arrived within 4 business days.  The 40 pound package did not arrive for 4 weeks.  Please as a seller on the internet encourage your buyers to pay the extra for the Priority Shipping, perhaps place the Parcel Post as the final option and put into your description that you encourage the Priority Shipping.  Please as a buyer consider paying the extra $2-$5 for Priority Shipping.  It truly is worth the extra peace of mind.  After all you are purchasing a new treasure, wouldn't it be nice to have it arrive as a new treasure??

You asked us ..... Why should I take an eBay class?
Five hours seems like a long time to learn something that you can learn yourself on line.  eBay appears to be so very easy that anyone can do it.  You are right, but....
The eBay class will teach you tools that will ease your listings, ease your shipping and ease your concerns about feedback.
Listings - Auction vs. Fixed Price, Variations, eBay Categories, Pictures, Descriptions (how honest should you be with an used item), Pricing an Item are just a few of the concerns that we discuss during the eBay Class.
Shipping - Parcel Post vs. Priority vs. Express, vs. First Class, Domestic, International (which countries are "safe"), Packing Materials, USPS vs. UPS vs. FedEx vs. Local Pick Up Only are some of the many choices that you have with eBay.
eBay Categories - One category or should you pay the extra fee for two categories
Pictures - Camera qualities that make your pictures "Pop", tripods, how many do you take, white or black background, what kind of details, what choices are there for editing the pictures.
Feedback - eBay does make a VERY big deal about feedback.  You can loose your listing capabilities if you get negative feedback.  We will assist you in  understanding how to increase your chances of getting positive feedback.
Five hours is actually a moment in the world of earning an income from eBay.
A Lot of This & A Lot of That offers eBay classes every other Saturday from 12-5 & we are willing to offer a class based upon your schedule.  Give us a call and ask about how we can help you start your own business with eBay.

You asked us ...... How does this work?
The brief answer is this; 1) you have treasures to sell, 2)  you make an appointment with A Lot of This & A Lot of That, 3) you clean your treasures, 4) you bring them to our store, 5) you sign a contract, 6) you help us list the inventory of your treasures, and 7) you help us decide upon a selling price.
The long answer is this:
1) Be particular about what you choose to sell.  The economy is such that a lot items that were collectibles and very expensive 20 years, 10 years and even 5 years ago are not selling for a lot of money right now.  Baseball cards, Norman Rockwell and Depression Glass are selling for less than 10% of what you paid for it.  Most treasures that you purchase and resell will sell for 25% of your original purchase price.  A Lot of This & A Lot of That does not accept items that will sell for less than $10 or any items that are considered "yard sale" items.  We will accept a group of items that will sell for more than $10, such as a collection.
2) The appointment will allow us to spend 15 minutes with you.  This the time for us to understand the value of your treasure.  You can bring in 5 items for each appointment that you make.
3) The more perfect the condition the treasure usually produces a higher price.  We will maintain your item once it is in the store, but we will not clean an item for you.  We dust, vacuum and set up your treasure.
4) The consignment fee is 30% if you bring your treasure to us and 50% if we pick up your treasure.
5) Your first appointment will be a time for us to discuss the consigning contract - your responsiblities and A Lot of This & A Lot That responsibilities.  The contract discusses timeframes and fees.  6) Your assistance at the time of inventorying is important because it is one of your opportunities to tell us the details of your treasure.  You can tell us age, a brief history, usage, where and how it was stored.  We may weight or measure your treasure.  We are determining if your treasure can be mailed to buyers.  We are determining a rough estimate of floor space for displaying.
7) You will see what the current market is bearing by looking with us at eBay and Google.  You will have the chance to explain why your treasure is worth more than the current selling price of similar items.   You ultimately set the asking price, we will guide, but you decide.  When you say to us, "Whatever you can get" that is allowing us to set the price.
8) Once your item sells you will recieve a check in the mail 10 days after the sale that will be the selling price minus fees.
That is how it works at A Lot of This & A Lot of That.  We look forward to selling for you.

You asked us ....... Why Sell and Why Not Sell to Canada?

Recently A Lot of This & A Lot of That started offering selling to Canada to our Consignors.  Your treasure will be listed on eBay as available for shipping.  This is an option, we will ask you when you leave your treasure if this is choice you wish to make.

Why sell to Canada?  eBay estimates that by offering to sell to Canada you increase your percentage of selling by 10%.  eBay also states that your treasure will be found more easily as eBay offers preferential treatment to those willing to sell internationally.

Why not sell to Canada? A Lot of This & A Lot of That spent an hour with our local Postmaster.  He explained that once a package leaves the United States the USPS is no longer responsible for the package.  There is always risk of selling and mailing a package - damage could occur, the package could get lost or someone who is less than honest could claim that the package never arrived.  A Lot of This & A Lot of That insures your treasure when it leaves our door when we ship the package.  We purchase insurance, at the cost of the buyer, when we calculate the shipping fees.  Canada has a good reputation with the USPS, but there is a risk.

Why sell to Canada?  A Lot of This & A Lot of That has considered selling to other countries, but at the present we are not comfortable offering other options.  We anticipate that in the future months we will offer Europe and Asia as options, but only with your permission for your treasures.  You are in control of where we sell your item.

Your treasures are still guaranteed to be located in at least three venues; such as, but not limited to; our store, eBay, Craigslist, Facebook and our website.
We are open to ideas from for selling your treasure.  Please feel free to send us an email (
info@alotofthisandalotofthat.com) or better for us is if you visit and chat with us.  We would love to see you.
You asked us ...... How much money do I make?                                                                                                                                                    December 2011

A Lot of This & A Lot of That strives to get the most money for your treasure.  Your treasure is listed in at least three venues - our store, our website, our Facebook page, eBay and Craigslist are the top five areas that we work towards listing your treasure.  EBay is the one area where we need to pay a fee for listing.  Therefore there is a minimum of $0.75 for each treasure that you bring to us.  Treasures that you deliver to us receive 70% of the selling price minus some fees (traditionally $0.75 for eBay and $0.25 for mailing the check to you).  Treasures that we pick up and you receive 50% of the selling price minus some fees (traditionally $0.75 for eBay and $0.25 for mailing the check to you).
We are looking into other venues to sell your treasures such as: Half.com, Amazon.com, and eBid.com.  These sites charge a fee, so A Lot of This & A Lot of That is trying to research the least expensive way to get "the most bang for your buck".  We are open to new ideas for selling and welcome your comments.  Please email to A Lot of This & A Lot of That at
info@alotofthisandalotofthat.com or visit us.  Each day brings a new treasure.  Thank you for choosing A Lot of This & A Lot of That.

You asked us ........ How do you price my item?                                                                                                                                                                November 2011

When you bring your items in for your appointment; we sit with you and show you what the current selling price of similar items are selling.  You will see on eBay that items are Listed for certain prices, but that does not mean that they are Selling for that price.  We will show you what the Completed Listing or Selling Price of similar items over the course of the past two weeks.
There are ways to get more for your items than the current Selling Price -
1) Clean - your item needs to be very clean
2) Unused - an unused item in the original box with the original tags with the original manuals will sell for more money.
3) Age - items that are either new <year 2011> (such as electronics) or very old <pre-1960> (such as dishes, cameras, furniture) will sell for more money
4) Used, but - a used item that is in very good to excellent condition will sell for more money.
5) Unusual - items that are unusual or a rare find will sell for more money.

You set the Selling price.  A Lot of This & A Lot of That will offer suggestions, but you are the one who sets the price.
